The current version of the original click-on-the-word XrefText is #6, distributed with this stack in a Stuffit file. The following describes the history of that original. Version 6: 1. Changed basic approach to "modeless" linking. The text field now no longer has to be locked to goto or create references (past XrefText users: please note the disappearance of the EDIT and LOCK buttons). These actions now simply require modifier keys when clicking on an editable text field. Option-click is still used to create a reference card while now a Command-click will take you to it. The two actions are differentiated by two different cursors - a cross-hair for option/creating and the browser/hand for command/gotos. 2. Click on the keyword field (the one that says "modifications" on this card) to find what other cards contain the keyword in their text bodies, and therefore are at least potential links to the keyword. This is in response to Ted Nelson's book, Literary Machines, which calls for 2-way linking in Hypertext* systems. Note that the little index field that appears can be clicked like the main, first-card index to go to the desired card. 3. Switched from "go back" to "push/pop" (HyperTalk stuff in the code) when going from one card to another. Should clean up "amBUGuities" when going up and down the hypertrail. Version 5: 1. Added PutFile XFCN for maccish textfile saves. 2. Enhanced file import abilities by making file input size larger (16K) and by giving the user the option to replace or append imported files when the target card already has text.. 3. Added ability to create keyword card from Index card (for those of you who are more comfortable with lists than with >hypertext<). 4. Added “Delete Card” button. 5. Developed XrefMerge, a utility for merging XrefText stacks which should be available where you got XrefText. 6. Fixed bug that screwed up stack if you cancelled a New Stack creation. Version 4: 1. Added output button to allow printing or saving to text files. You can print either a report of the keyword and body fields or the image of the stack. You can save a text file of either the current card, or of the keyword and body fields of the whole stack. 2. Added a custom icon-based button that can be placed on your home card automatically. From there, you can put it where you will. This would be handy if you use different >XrefText< stacks for different >applications<. Version 3: 1. Increased size of text area by using the little icon-like buttons you see above. 2. Added alphabetizing Index system to first, give an index capability, and second, provide a clue as to when you're getting near the top (or is it bottom?) of the stack so you don't back out into your home stack accidently. 3. Added capability to import an external text file to an reference cards empty text area. This is facilitated by the XFCN "FileName" provided by Steve Maller of Apple Computer. 4. Added ability to create a "clean slate" to >paint< a graphics-oriented card. 5. Added naming of cards to match keywords. Version 2: 1. Mel >Ristau<'s first graphic rhinoplasty. -- part contents for background part 41 ----- text ----- What links to modifications? -- part contents for background part 42 ----- text ----- XrefText modifications
